Peter Rasmussen on the Broncs ~ An insider's view on UTPA athletics.

Delgado has been impressive

Jesus Delgado

Jesus Delgado has been a real upside for the UTPA Broncs during conference play.

He is gaining valuable experience and playing the way coach Ryan Marks predicted back in December. Delgado had been struggling mostly because he was becoming accustomed to a new system. He has really come on strong as of late.

On the season he is only averaging 4.8 points but 10.0 in Great West play. In fact since the Chicago State game on Jan. 19, he is averaging 10.5 points and is shooting 54.5 percent. On this current homestand, he might be the most consistent player behind Jared Maree.

Here is what Marks had to say about Delgado after Wednesday’s win  over CSU Bakersfield:

“I certainly don’t have a crystal ball and I’m not that smart. We had a team meeting back in December when I was talking to the guys about some stuff. I said, ‘Guys, I promise you four to five weeks from now, Jesus Delgado will be playing really well. I have seen it time and again. You have a good guy who is a hard worker just coming in from junior college and he is just not comfortable in the system. All of a sudden, usually that Jan. 1-mark comes and that is when they turn the corner. That is what has happened with him.”

Broncs on a roll

It might seem strange to some when I say the Broncs look as if they are having fun. But it looks as if they are really enjoying themselves. Winning has a way of doing that.

The Broncs have played well recently. I would say it is the best over a stretch of games they have played in the four seasons I have covered the Broncs. After thinking about it, junior guard Aaron Urbanus also said it might be the best the Broncs have played in the three years he has been at UTPA.

Big Meeting

January 30th, 2012, 11:53 pm by

I was glad to hear over the weekend that the Southland Conference was at least going to listen to UTPA about the prospect of being invited into the conference.

The Southland makes the most sense geographically and competitively.

As is the case with the realignment of any conference, however, it is tough to figure out which direction the Southland wants to go. I found it interesting that Commissioner Tom Burnett said the priority for the Southland is still to bring in a school or schools that sponsor football.

Of course, UTPA is not at a point in which it is ready or wants to pursue football. The commissioner didn’t slam the door shut. He just said football is a priority and that things can change.

Season underway

January 20th, 2012, 11:42 pm by

One team to always keep an eye at UTPA is the men’s tennis team because it has an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The Broncs compete in the Southland Conference.

The expectations might be tame this year because the Broncs are coming off a not-so-great season, are young and have a a new coach in Paul Goode. But when you are in a conference with an AQ, you never know what can happen. It would be refreshing, though, to see a Broncs team make it past a conference tournament.

The men’s team will be led by one of only two seniors of the team, Beau Bernstein, who is a two-time All-Southland Conference selection. The rest of the team is comprised of freshmen and sophomores. The other senior is Abdel Riani.

UTPA opens the season Saturday at SMU.

The other game

January 20th, 2012, 12:43 am by

The UTPA men’s losing streak on the road is finally over, picking up a win over Chicago State. It’s good to see someone other than Brandon Provost, Jared Maree and Aaron Urbanus get in on the scoring. Jesus Delgado was 5 for 5 from the field and scored 14 points.

On the horizon, though, is what looks to be a solid NJIT team, which had little trouble with Houston Baptist tonight. Isaiah Wilkerson is arguably the best team in the Great West Conference.

Great West Preview

January 19th, 2012, 6:14 pm by

The Great West Conference begins play today. Of course, the conference doesn’t have an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, but the winner of the conference tournament gets an invitation to the Collegeinsider.com tournament. It is either that or nothing for these teams.

One big difference in the conference this year is that there is no more South Dakota, which left for the The Summit League.

In the news

January 18th, 2012, 7:17 pm by

The UTPA track and field program made some news this week.

t will be an interesting start to indoor season the season after former coach Dave Hartman resigned less than a week before the programs’ first meet. I could be wrong, but it seems as if UTPA was blindsided by Hartman’s timing. I’m also not quite sure why UTPA wouldn’t say whether or not it was going to look for a new coach. Xavier Richardson was named the interim coach.

They really need this

January 12th, 2012, 11:16 pm by

After speaking to UTPA President Robert S. Nelsen, he seemed optimistic that the Great West Conference will eventually earn multisport status, which basically would give the league an AQ in team sports.

There are no guarantees and, from what I can gather, the NCAA is tough to gauge.

Basically, a conference needs seven core teams together for eight years to earn multisport status. It was a rule that was implemented after the Great West was formed and has crippled the conference. Because the Great West doesn’t have multisport status, it can’t court programs looking to move up from Division II. There are some teams out there the Great West can potentially go after.

More on the Great West

January 6th, 2012, 2:15 am by

There was plenty of good news to come out of  UTPA on Thursday. Not only did the UTPA women’s basketball team score a big win over TCU but it looks as if the NCAA will give the Great West Conference a good listen next week about giving the league an automatic bid.

It’s only a meeting but if the Great West, led by Utah Valley President Matthew Holland and UTPA President Robert S. Nelsen, can woo the NCAA, the Great West will officially be recognized by the NCAA and given multi-sports status, allowing it to pursue schools to join the Great West. As it stands now, the Great West can’t court programs looking to move up from Division II. Independents such as Longwood and Cal State Bakersfield don’t want to join the Great West in all sports because it doesn’t have an AQ.
