Delgado has been impressive

February 9th, 2012, 6:53 pm by

Jesus Delgado

Jesus Delgado has been a real upside for the UTPA Broncs during conference play.

He is gaining valuable experience and playing the way coach Ryan Marks predicted back in December. Delgado had been struggling mostly because he was becoming accustomed to a new system. He has really come on strong as of late.

On the season he is only averaging 4.8 points but 10.0 in Great West play. In fact since the Chicago State game on Jan. 19, he is averaging 10.5 points and is shooting 54.5 percent. On this current homestand, he might be the most consistent player behind Jared Maree.

Here is what Marks had to say about Delgado after Wednesday’s win  over CSU Bakersfield:

“I certainly don’t have a crystal ball and I’m not that smart. We had a team meeting back in December when I was talking to the guys about some stuff. I said, ‘Guys, I promise you four to five weeks from now, Jesus Delgado will be playing really well. I have seen it time and again. You have a good guy who is a hard worker just coming in from junior college and he is just not comfortable in the system. All of a sudden, usually that Jan. 1-mark comes and that is when they turn the corner. That is what has happened with him.”

Broncs on a roll

February 9th, 2012, 1:52 am by

It might seem strange to some when I say the Broncs look as if they are having fun. But it looks as if they are really enjoying themselves. Winning has a way of doing that.

The Broncs have played well recently. I would say it is the best over a stretch of games they have played in the four seasons I have covered the Broncs. After thinking about it, junior guard Aaron Urbanus also said it might be the best the Broncs have played in the three years he has been at UTPA.

The other game

January 20th, 2012, 12:43 am by

The UTPA men’s losing streak on the road is finally over, picking up a win over Chicago State. It’s good to see someone other than Brandon Provost, Jared Maree and Aaron Urbanus get in on the scoring. Jesus Delgado was 5 for 5 from the field and scored 14 points.

On the horizon, though, is what looks to be a solid NJIT team, which had little trouble with Houston Baptist tonight. Isaiah Wilkerson is arguably the best team in the Great West Conference.

Great West Preview

January 19th, 2012, 6:14 pm by

The Great West Conference begins play today. Of course, the conference doesn’t have an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, but the winner of the conference tournament gets an invitation to the Collegeinsider.com tournament. It is either that or nothing for these teams.

One big difference in the conference this year is that there is no more South Dakota, which left for the The Summit League.

Where: Icardo Center

Series: UTPA leads 2-0, beating Bakersfield twice in Feb. of 2008

Disappointing homestand

January 4th, 2012, 1:25 am by

After the Broncs’ close loss to St. John’s on Dec. 21, I was looking forward to their homestand with Arlington, Tulane and Division III Oswego. I figured that If they played as well as they did against the Red Storm, I was in for some good basketball.

Things didn’t turn out that way. Instead, the Broncs looked out of sync offensively in all three games. They are having trouble making shots they made last season, especially from 3-point range. If Oswego would have shot the ball just a little better, it would have beaten UTPA.

Player of the Week

January 3rd, 2012, 6:17 pm by

With Great West Conference play around the corner, it is time to pay more attention to the Broncs’ conference foes.

On Monday, NJIT’s Isaiah Wilkerson was named the Player of the Week by the Great West Conference. While reading the release, I realized UTPA has not had a player of the week this season for women or men. You would think at least one Broncs player would have earned the recognization by now. It can’t be that difficult, there are only six teams in the non-AQ conference.

Know your foe

December 30th, 2011, 7:57 pm by

Kendall Timmons via the Associated Press

Tulane Green Wave (11-2) at UTPA Broncs (4-11)

When: 1 p.m., Saturday

Where: UTPA Field House

Series: Tulane leads series 3-0, beating UTPA 88-65 last season. The last time Tulane played in Edinburg it beat UTPA 90-74 (1990).

Last Game: UTPA lost to UT-Arlington 83-56 on Thursday; Tulane dropped a 80-61 game to No. 1 Syracuse on Dec. 22.

Probable Starters: Tulane – G Ricky Tarrant (12.5 ppg); G Jordan Callahan (10.6 ppg); G Kendall Timmons (13.5 ppg); F Josh Davis (11.4 ppg); F Kevin Thomas (1.7 ppg); UTPA – G Brandon Provost (13.1 ppg); G Jared Maree (14.4 ppg); G Nick Weiermiller (4.0 ppg); G Jesus Delgado (3.3 ppg).

Game Notes: Conference USA’s Tulane will be among the best teams UTPA will face this season at the Field House. The Green Wave have only lost two games this season, one of which was to top-ranked Syracuse. Their 11-2 start is the best since they were 13-2 to start the 1994-95 season. … Saturday’s game will be Tulane’s first in nine days. … The Broncs are coming off an 83-56 loss to Texas-Arlington in what was one of their worst performances of the year. … Kendall Timmons is only 17 away from reaching 1,000 career points. … Jared Maree and Brandon Provost have been the only consistent scorers for the Broncs this season. Aaron Urbanus has come on strong as of late but UTPA still does not have a third consistent double-digit scorer at the moment. … Of UTPA’s wins, only one has come against a Division I school. … Playing against these mid-major teams are a good test for the Broncs. They are the type of teams UTPA hopes to play on a consistent basis in a conference with an AQ. Hopefully, the Broncs show up for this one.

Didn’t make my story

Broncs coach Ryan Marks

Thursday night was not a good one for the Broncs. They were outplayed on both ends of the floor. The Broncs didn’t play well but I thought the UT-Arlington Mavericks looked as good as any the Broncs have played at the Field House this season.

Arlington coach Scott Cross thought he was in for a difficult game because Brandon Provost didn’t play in the first game between the two teams because of an illness and he noticed the Broncs’ score against St. John’s. His team, though, cruised to another blowout victory.

“Our guys were really focused,” Cross said. “We saw on tape how capable they are beating anyone in the country. St. John’s is a good Big East team. The way they played against them, that scared us to death. The first game we thought was a little misleading because they didn’t have Brandon Provost. We know what kind of player he is. He is a big time player. I think our guys were really focused and played hard every possession. I was really proud of them, especially the rebounding. We did a good job there.”

Raitings Watch

December 29th, 2011, 5:53 pm by

I was checking out the USA Today Jeff Sagarin Raitings and realized the Broncs have some stiff competition over their next two games. Tonight’s opponent UT-Arlington (6-5) is 137 in the ratings while Saturday’s foe Tulane (11-2) is 109. By comparison, St. John’s, a Big East school UTPA almost beat last week, has a 202 rating.

If the Broncs, who are 309 in the ratings, can be successful over the next two games, their rating will jump. It won’t be easy.
